The Arkhangelsk puppet theatre was established in 1933. It is twice a laureate of the National theatrical award “The Golden Mask” (1996 – the Christmas performance “The Crib”, nomination “The best performance of the puppet theatre”; 2003 – performance “Hamlet, the Danish prince”, nomination «The best actor’s work”), a participant of lots of international festivals in Russia and Europe (Germany, France (Paris, Avignon), Sweden, Norway, Finland, Greece).

Since 1986 the theatre is a collective member of the International association of puppeteers UNIMA.

Nowadays the Arkhangelsk puppet theatre is one of the most noticeable parts of international and Russian culture life. There are more then 30 performances for children and adults of different genres and forms in the repertoire of the theatre. The theatre often turns to traditional forms of puppet art: it transports the audience in the atmosphere of the old booth show, present to the audience the touching warm of home performance (“Cat’s house”, “Three bears”, “Mashenka and Bear”) and merry mood of the folk holiday (“About the awful Dragon…”, “The mad tale”), makes the Christmas performance (“The Crib”)… There are a lot of actable performances, built on a direct contact with the audience (“Three pigs”, “Hair, Fox and Cock”, “Shchucha-SUPERstar”, so on), magic performances which involve the audience in their fairytale world (“Morozko”, “Fairy tales of the Parrot”) and show-performances (“Small show for big people”, “Thinking hands”). The theatre has an experience of work with world classical dramaturgy (“Hamlet, the Danish prince” by W. Shakespeare, “Love to the golden orange” by C. Gozzi, “The Seagull” by A. P. Chekhov). Lyricism and harlequinade, mystique and grotesque, irony and humor combine and exist as an equal on the stage of the Arkhangelsk puppet theatre.

There are 17 people in the troop of the theatre.

The art director of the theatre – honored man of art of Russian Federation, laureate of award of the Government of Russian Federation named after F. Volkov – Dmitry A. Lokhov, the director of the theatre - Vladimir V. Morozov.
